Canada's retaliatory tariffs on a range of US goods came into effect on Tuesday, targeting nearly C$28 billion (USD) worth of American products, including steel, furniture, and cotton T-shirts, with rates up to 50%. Fresh fish and lobster were initially included but later omitted after pushback from its seafood industry, highlighting the delicate balance Canada must maintain in its retaliation against its largest trading partner.
Both US and Canadian officials have expressed a desire to resume trade talks, which collapsed in late August. Prime Minister Mark Carney stated Canada is still seeking a durable trade agreement beneficial to both nations. Meanwhile, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer accused Canada of rejecting their best offer, suggesting the US might retaliate by banning Canadian products. President Donald Trump threatened to halt business with Canada-based aerospace company Bombardier unless it relocates manufacturing south of the border, noting the company contributes over C$7 billion annually to Canada’s GDP.
Canada’s economy showed resilience pre-tariffs, with a 3.3% GDP growth in Q2 and 181,000 jobs added from April to July. However, 41,000 jobs were lost in August, coinciding with new US tariffs and collapsed trade talks. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce urged a measured approach to retaliation, warning of potential escalation. The lobster industry, critical to both countries, faces trade disruptions due to cross-border processing dependencies. Canada’s trade reliance on the US has decreased from 75% pre-war to 66% in July, prompting efforts to diversify trade partners.
